Comprehensive Center for Sickle Cell Disease

The Comprehensive Center for Sickle Cell Disease at UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital Oakland is one of the largest and most comprehensive Sickle Cell Programs in the Western United States.

Our services include:

  • Inpatient care for all complications of sickle cell disease
  • Intensive care for life-threatening complications
  • Bone marrow transplant that provides for a cure of sickle cell disease to qualified patients
  • Transfusion services including automated red cell exchange transfusion
  • Screening and treatment for stroke risk with transcranial doppler
  • Screening and treatment for pulmonary disease
  • Diagnosis and treatment for complications of neurovascular disease
  • Diagnosis and treatment for avascular necrosis of joints
  • Screening and treatment of pulmonary hypertension with echocardiogram
  • Psychosocial support for advocating for and identifying resources for school, workplaces, and communities
  • Research for sickle cell disease therapies, innovations in care, and transplant medicine

Stad Center for Pediatric Pain, Palliative & Integrative Medicine

The Sickle Cell team works with the Stad Center for Pediatric Pain, Palliative & Integrative Medicine to provide the right pain care for each patient. The service is staffed by two teams: the acute and chronic pain team focuses on comprehensive pain management; the palliative care team provides an extra layer of support for patients facing serious illness.
